We all have our battles…

Not really news. The Iranians downed one of our drones this way. We don’t know exactly what technology they were using but it is not new.

Many years ago, before Clinton ended obfuscation, the most precise navigation bits were available only to military receivers. Before then it was common to install a special GPS transmitter at airports to supplement the satellite information. Set it up incorrectly and all local GPS would be off.

Military receivers are supposed to have an encrypted mode to protect them from spoofing, but apparently it was not enabled or was not installed in the drone. Probably the latter in order to protect the hardware from loss, or because MILSPEC miniaturized GPS chips are unavailable, or some combination thereof.

Iraq tried this during the war. They got some jammers from the Russians and tried to throw off our military. Our guys just tuned a few missiles to seek that frequency. A few big booms later the program was bits of scattered metal and sad news to the operators families.

Iraq evidently tried to use those jammers against U.S. forces after the U.S.-led coalition began strikes against Iraqi targets last week. “We have noticed some attempts by the Iraqis to use a GPS jamming system that they obtained from another nation. We have destroyed all six of those jammers in the last two nights’ airstrikes. I’m pleased to say they had no effect on us,” Air Force Maj. Gen. Victor Renuart, of the U.S. Central Command, said yesterday.

re: #2 John Vreeland

There was a theory (maybe in Wired mag) that the Iranians jammed up the encrypted signal completely and the drone then defaulted to the unencrypted system which was then used to spoof the drone. Seems plausible.

The encrypted signal is just an extra series of bits used to fight jamming. If you cannot read that signal then you cannot read anything. The anti-jam was designed to defeat jamming and spoofing attempts. It would be very stupid to ignore the anti-jamming signal in the presence of jamming, so I am going to say this did not happen. It would be like switching to http because https was not working at your bank.

History, and particularly military history, is full of decisions just that stupid
